NEW YORK DECLARATION FOR REFUGEES AND MIGRANTS (2016)
The Declaration reaffirms the importance of the international refugee regime and contains a wide range of commitments by Member States to strengthen and enhance mechanisms to protect people on the move.
In the New York Declaration for Refugees and Migrants, adopted in September 2016, the General Assembly (GA) decided to develop a global compact for safe, orderly and regular migration. The process to develop this started in April 2017. The GA will then hold an intergovernmental conference on international migration in 2018 with a view to adopting the global compact.
The Global Compact for Migration will be the first intergovernmentally negotiated agreement prepared under the United Nations to cover all dimensions of international migration in a holistic and comprehensive manner. It is framed consistent with target 10.7 of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in which member States committed to cooperate internationally to facilitate safe, orderly and regular migration and its scope is defined in Annex II of the New York Declaration.
UNMGCY is facilitating formal youth engagement in all aspects of the three of the process of the Global Compact for Migration. These include the thematic meeting, the regional meetings, the stakeholder dialogues, the national consultations and the intergovernmental negotiations. It is also participating in the Together Campaign.
As a member of UNMGCY, you have a chance to contribute to all these deliberations and provide inputs at all stages of work. Opportunities are shared through email servers and communication channels.
