HLPF Side-Event: Protecting Civic Space, Enabling Peace: Youth at the Frontlines of SDG16+ Implementation
Tuesday, July 22 2-3 PM
Cohosted by: Major Group for Children and Youth SDG16 Youth Caucus, International Association of Youth and Students for Peace, TAP Network, Blue Tree Foundation, United Nations Development Programme
Summary: As we mark the 10th anniversary of UNSCR 2250 and approach the midpoint of the 2030 Agenda, protecting civic space and meaningfully including youth in peacebuilding is more urgent than ever. Despite growing restrictions, young peacebuilders are advancing human rights, preventing conflict, and holding institutions accountable—often in fragile or repressive environments. This event will bring together youth from diverse backgrounds—including civil society, the UN system, and Member States—to explore how they are defending civic space and to share concrete recommendations for their protection and inclusion in SDG16+ implementation.
