COVID-19, The Armed Conflict Zone of Bamenda and Community Schools. Private Classes for Children

Location: Cameroon (Bamenda, North West Region)

It should be noted this is an armed conflict zone where for over 3 years schools have been going on timidly. Thus, parents are trying to mitigate the short and long term effects of children staying out of school for long.

Parents have resulted in “community schoolings” as they now send their children to different private teachers (depending on how they are charged) within the communities closest to their homes for lessons
For example in the Akumlam neighbourhood where we have over 4 primary school teachers, some having more than 15 children to teach

This initiative is tackling the Covid-19 crisis

  • Raising Awareness to overcome and shape the narratives of non-existence of covid-19 in Cameroon and Covid-19 being a myth as perceived by a majority of the population of Cameroon.

  • Overcoming the public narratives that children do not contract and die from Covid-19

  • Mainstream the utilization of facemasks

  • Re- emphasizing hand washing modalities and their importance such as using soap and washing hands for at least 20 seconds

  • Production of 2000 “pocket hand sanitizers” (59 ml) for children going to “community schools” or private classes and their teachers in this armed conflict zone.

  • Teaching children about social distancing (in different languages and also lay language for better comprehension).

  • Also, sensitization sessions with community school teachers about practicing and following preventive modalities and norms to mitigate the spread of Covd-19.
